New EPA Bans for your R-22 HVAC Unit

As of January 1, 2020, the EPA has put a ban on the production and import of HCFC-22 and HCFC-142b. After 2020, the servicing of systems with R-22 will rely on recycled or stockpiled quantities.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

There is some confusion as to how this will impact older systems. The EPA is not requiring you to buy a new air condition system. We recommend that all A/C units older than 3-5 years old be put on a Maintenance Agreement. (Privette Heating & Air offers Maintenance Agreements) This will give you an idea of what type of service you need or repairs you may be facing soon, so you can plan accordingly. If your cooling system uses R-22, you can still have your system serviced or recharged. Prepare yourself for a raise in price per pound. Eventually you will have no choice but to replace your cooling system.

RETROFITTING OLDER AC SYSTEMS

In some cases, an option may be to retrofit your older system if the coils are compatible with R410A refrigerant. (R-410A, is a non-ozone-depleting HFC refrigerant blend.) This is something that we can only determine in an inspection. In most cases, this solution can be expensive. When you consider the cost, and the age of your air conditioner, a system replacement may end up being more cost effective in the long run. Our technicians are happy to give a free price quote on a new system.

REPLACEMENT SYSTEMS

Most people are opting for a high efficiency replacement system, not a retrofit. As a homeowner, you need to consider and balance several key factors in your decision to purchase a new unit, such as energy efficiency, performance, reliability, cost, and the refrigerant used.

At Privette Heating & Air, we are a Carrier Dealer with experienced Technicians, who will put our customers first. We know that HVAC replacement is a big investment, therefore we are happy to offer financing options! This means that our clients enjoy nothing but the highest quality equipment and confidence that both Privette Heating & Air and Carrier will protect their investment.
